CASE STUDY COMPULSORY
Martha, I asked you to come by the office today because I am evaluating the performance of every one in my department. You have done a lot of good work this year and I want you to know that I appreciate it. I do notice what is going on in your department. You are to be commended.
Of course, there are a few areas in which you could improve but let’s start the evaluation with the good side. You’ve done a fine job in getting your people involved in team decision making. Your department has an effective system of planning and scheduling of activities which increase your output. I’m also glad you’re taking an acting role in my staff meetings.
Now, Martha, let me tell you where I think you need some improvement. I hope these remarks may help you to do an even better job next year. Your attitude towards your work and the division is bad and I believe that it is rubbing off on your people. You also need to set an example in the area of promptness of your people. You often are late to meetings, arriving at work or returning from lunch. Be more conscientious about promptness. I think you need to be more imaginative and creative in your approach to your job. You do the things that are required but that’s it nothing extra or innovative.
“Do you have any thoughts or questions on this?”
1. What response do you anticipate from Martha?
2. How might the discussion be handled more effectively?
