Need for propagating ideas of Environment Protection: VSU VC

“There is a strong need for propagating ideas relating to protecting our environment among youth,” said Prof. C.R. Visweswara Rao, Vice-Chancellor, in the workshop on Climate Change: Need for Environmental Education,”  organized by the Department of Social Work with financial assistance by Andhra Pradesh State Pollution Control Board, Nellore region on 19th January 2011.  This is the 11th academic event organized in the University in this academic year.  Research scholars, students, social work personnel and practitioners from Non-governmental organizations in and around Nellore region participated in this workshop. In his presidential address, Prof. Rao drew attention to the immediacy of thinking in terms of the green planet which will enable the future generations a sustainable living.  He also referred to the super power – third world equilibrium in terms of technology adaptation for carbon control for ensuring world economic progress.  On lines of the Special Economic zones that gained currency in the recent past he also felt the need for developing the Special Agricultural Zones as suggested by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan which ensure the green buffer zones for mopping up the carbon content in the atmosphere.
            Sri. T. Seeta Ramaiah, Additional Joint Collector, Person-in-Charge, Nellore Municipal Corporation, the Chief Guest of the function, dealt with the scare of pollutants making inroads into every sphere of human life. He dwelt on  emotional pollution, its impact on social harmony and said that the responsibility of controlling toxic pollutants does not singularly lie on the government but on individuals who ought to invoke their responsibility with the objective of providing clean environment.
            Prof. V. Narayana Reddy, Registrar congratulated the Coordinator of the Workshop Dr. Suneetha for coming up with an issue of immediate relevance to the society.  He said that it is time that the students knew the significance and efficacy of environment and worked with missionary zeal for a greener planet. Referring to the industrial progress being achieved at the cost of high-intensive pollution, he said that youth should take the responsibility on their shoulders for ensuring a safe planet for the succeeding generations.
            Sri. E. Sathya Narayana, Environmental Engineer, A.P. Pollution Control Board, Nellore, the Guest of Honour said that the A.P. Pollution Control Board is aiming at creating awareness about the climate change not only in the students and youth but also among the entrepreneurs for taking on the responsibility of preserving the planet Earth. Pointing out the role of  the Pollution Control Board, he said reducing pollution at source is the modern practice to ensure the reduction of industrial wastage hazardous to environment.
            Earlier, Dr. K. Suneetha, Coordinator of the Workshop presented the objectives of the Workshop and stressed the efficacy of environmental education among the youth.
            The Workshop was signed off in a grand manner.  Prof. C.R. Visweswara Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. V. Narayana Reddy, Registrar, Sri. T. Seetha Ramaiah, Additional Joint Collector, Nellore Municipal Corporation, Sri. E. Sathya Narayana, Senior Scientist, A.P. Pollution Control Board, Nellore, gave away certificates to the participants.
