Soft Skills Workshop for Job Orientation in VSU
VC calls for Language Competence and Social Skills in students
“Students have to acquire good language competence in order to possess global reckoning which instills confindence in the trans-cultural technical environment,” said Prof. C.R. Visweswara Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Vikrama Simhapuri University inaugurating the one day Workhsop on “Soft Skills for Professional Success,” on 29th December 2010. The Workshop attended by 140 students from the select colleges of Nellore region received an overwhelming response with students involving in the day long task-oriented and activity-based sessions conducted by the Resource Persons from The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad. Talking on the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor said that language acquisition has become a barrier for many professionals in getting the much cherished placement. In addition the consumer inclined market today requires good interpersonal skills to deal with the clientele and the diffident and the shy will find it hard to stand ground in the tough competitive scenario, he said. He dwelt on explaining to the students to drive away the inhibitions regarding the ability to interact in a positive way and mould themselves into socially graceful.
Prof. T. Sudha, Dean, College Development Council in her presidential address congratulated the Coordinator of the Workshop, Sri K. Narasimha Rao for organizing this Workshop for the students to train them in the skills expected by the global market.
Prof. S. Mohan Raj, The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad said that English has become a coordinating bi-lingual in many regions. Dwelling at length, he explained the use of English for both specific and everyday purpose. He dealt with the inhibitions of the second language learners in getting good competence in language and said that learners’ should feel the democratic right to commit learning errors only to gain standardization of their language.
Prof. Jaya Shree Mohan Raj, the Guest of Honour, the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad instilled confidence in the students that language learning is an experiential activity and the students should not fear the foreign tongue as an insurmountable hurdle. She said that English language can be learnt when the students have keenness to gain as many technical and usage oriented application from watching TV, advertisements, news reports which form the authentic material for learning.
Sri K. Narasimha Rao, Coordinator of the Workshop in his presentation of the objectives of the workshop asserted the pivotal role played by the Soft Skills as the deal breaker in many of today’s hiring decisions. He stressed on driving away the inhibitons of the students regarding their ability to interact in a positive way and making them socially graceful.
The Professional Colleges in the region responded well by sending III semester and IV semester students knocking the doors of the job market. The three sessions conducted in the Workshop dealt with the guided learning, individual learning strategies and group dynamics enabled by practical linguistic competence. The participants gave their feedback before the Valediction commenced and certificates were distributed to the participants. The feeling at the end of the day was that of fulfillment and satisfaction for the participants and for the organizers. The programme demonstrated the immense potential of the region and the passion of the students to become the potential workforce of the future.
