March 04,2010: It was a memorable day for students of Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) in Nellore city.
Students of M.Sc (Marine Biology), MBA, MWS (Disaster Management) exchanged their views with students of Marburg University, Germany, who are on an educational tour to India.
A group of students of Soil, Hydro-Geography, Water and Resource Management of the university, headed by Associate Professor Thomas Hennig and Prof. Opp, visited VSU on Thursday.
Prof. Thomas and Prof. Opp interacted with VSU Registrar V.Narayana Reddy, Computer Sciences HoD T. Sudha and other faculty and explained about the curriculum and the research programmes being taken up in Geography Department in the university.
The faculty enquired with Prof. Reddy about the length of the coastline situated, marine ecology in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district, aquaculture, processing and export companies and industries located on the seabed villages.
The German university students exchanged views with the marine biology students and enquired about the availability of aquatic products and the syllabus and the field activity in various courses.
They enquired about the lifestyle of the fishermen and the Yanadi tribes living in the seacoast villages. Later, the German team visited Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited in Krishnapatnam village and observed the facilities in the port.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Thomas said the purpose of the educational tour is to study the natural conditions, tradition and culture in India. The tour will also envisage the inter-university cooperation in academics, technical and research programmes, he said.
“This is the first time that students from a foreign university visited VSU. Such programmes will help to exchange ideas among the students,” said P. Prathima, an MSc (Marine Biology) student.
