Jan 25, 2011: Many first-time voters who attended the National Voters' Day celebrations on Tuesday here were startled on seeing the data given by district officials in Nellore district.
The officials supplied details (copies) of the district population, eligible voters, total voters enrolled and other details to EC officials and the media. As per the data, 18,75,516 voters are there in the district (upto 1-1-2011) and only 165 are not having photographs! Of the total, 18,75,456 voters received Electronic Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) and only 60 persons don't have identity cards. Interestingly, many voters who were not enrolled, don't have EPICs, or those who have not submitted photographs to the officials and with other objections queued up at the counters set up by the electoral staff at Sri Venkateswara Kasturba Kalakshetram, the venue of the programme. Addressing the participants, Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) Vice-Chancellor C.R. Visweswara Rao who was the chief guest said due to poor electoral registration, the voting percentage was recording less which is an insult for the democratic system.
Collector and District Electoral Officer K. Ramgopal who chaired the programme, said out of 19,73,453 voters in the district, 95 percent were enrolled. VSU Registrar V.Narayana Reddy interacted with the first time voters and explained them on the need to vote. Later, the officials felicitated senior voters and presented certificates to the students who stood top in essay and elocution contests.
