- Involve more students in NSS so that they can create awareness among people, says VSU Vice-Chancellor
- Students have adopted a few villages for improving literacy, says varsity NSS programme coordinator
Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) Vice-Chancellor C.R. Visweswara Rao has called upon the students to join in National Service Scheme (NSS) which will shape the youth into good citizens.
Speaking at the NSS University Advisory Committee meeting held here on Thursday, he asked the programme officers to involve more students in NSS so that the volunteers can create awareness among the rural folk on various social evils.
Stating that the parents should encourage their wards in taking up extra-curricular activities like NCC, sports and games, cultural activities and service activities, the Vice-Chancellor said the field visits, seminars, workshops, rallies and the special camps will provide overall knowledge for the youngsters on the grievances in rural areas, health awareness and other social problems.
Literacy
Registrar V. Narayana Reddy said that NSS will inculcate the habit of serving the poor and the needy right from the student age. He directed the programme officers to cover all fields including awareness programmes on literacy, sanitation, voter awareness, Pulse Polio Immunisation, blood donation, HIV/AIDS, prevention of ragging, environment protection, ban on usage of polythene bags, plantation and other programmes.
Mr. Reddy also advised the volunteers to take up a special drive to sensitise the villagers on various government schemes being implemented by the State and Central governments for the poor and women.
Review
NSS Assistant Programme Adviser, Hyderabad, K. Rajendran, reviewed the programmes conducted by VSU NSS volunteers during the year 2010-11 and appreciated the students for conducting more programmes. He said the NSS would organise sensitization programmes for the officers on various problems, who in turn will organise field visits for the volunteers in villages.
University NSS Programme Coordinator Dr. K. Ramesh Reddy said the students conducted several programmes and adopted a few villages in improving literacy.
More than 5,000 villagers were sensitised in the district and a special drive was taken up to increase voter enrolment, he said.
Programme Officers Y. Vijaya and R. Prabhakar presented a report on the academic activities planned during the year 2011-2012.
The students planned several programmes to enlighten the people against ‘superstitions', planting saplings, clean and green, child labour, yoga and other issues, they said.
