Colleges told to enhance quality of education

May 10, 2010: Speakers at a meeting with affiliated college managements appealed to the principals and correspondents to merge the boundaries between the colleges and universities and cooperate for improving standards in higher education.

Vice-Chancellors of Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) N. Prabhakar Rao and Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) C.R. Visweswara Rao and Registrar V. Narayana Reddy interacted with the principals of affiliated institutions, which are coming under VSU, in the first meeting held here on Sunday.

Prof. Visweswara Rao said there are many challenges before the higher education and asked the private and aided college managements to be prepared to face them. Stating that about 20,000 colleges are there in the country of which only 4,000 got NAAC accreditation, he asked the managements to improve quality in education, infrastructure and discipline to get NAAC accreditation.

The V-C asked the managements to give priority for research programmes, which would enhance the quality in teaching.

The professional colleges should constitute anti-ragging committees and monitoring committees to check eve-teasing and ragging incidents, he said.

Prof. Prabakar Rao said India is lagging behind in higher education enrolment, which was only 11.5 per cent instead of 20 per cent as per the country's population.

Assuring to do all possible help for the budding university, the V-C stressed the need to increase enrolments to 20 per cent in degree, PG and professional colleges.

Prof. Prabhakar Rao, a native of Nellore district, recalled his school and college days at Venkatagiri Raja's School and college campus. The Registrar welcomed the affiliated institutions in Nellore district into the VSU fold. The university would prepare an academic calendar for all colleges, he said.
