April 26, 2011: The management of Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) is proposing to start the University College of Engineering and Technology in association with Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited (KPCL) in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district.
The university management recently wrote a letter to the port management through the district administration, which would be submitted to the State government for approval, said the university officials.
VSU, which started in 2008, has acquired 88.33 acres of land in Kakuturu village, (on Nellore outskirts), close to Krishpatnam Port and other industries. The new university is offering about ten courses at present, and has started Ph.D programmes from this year.
VSU Vice-Chancellor C.R. Visweswara Rao said that the university proposed to start an engineering college with four courses – Marine Engineering (ME), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) and Computer Science Engineering (CSE).
Though there are about 500 engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh, but most of them are not in a position to provide quality education as per the requirement of the industry and many students are pursuing engineering courses in the neighbouring States. In Nellore district, the institution managements are concentrating on traditional engineering courses, but are not focusing on industry-oriented programmes, which are important for the growing industries.
“It was observed that there are no collaboration ventures with the textile and other manufacturing companies to offer a tailor-made course with skill component necessary to meet the urgent demand in Nellore district. Courses like Marine Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, Electrical and Computer Science Engineering will have direct bearing on the activities of KPCL and other companies, and will provide jobs to the youth immediately after the completion of the courses,” Mr. Rao said.
Registrar V. Narayana Reddy said that VSU was waiting for the response from the port management to start the engineering college. Once we have tie-up with KPCL, the university will allocate necessary land for the proposed engineering on its campus at Kakutur village.
VSU has plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), National Institute of Tourism and Hospital Management (NITHM), Narayana Hospitals, National Institute of Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurship (NIMSHE), Reliance Power Industries, ISRO, Agri-Biotech Foundation, India Network Foundation, Florida, USA and Aptuit Laurus Pvt. Limited, for supporting the existing as well as the future proposed the courses.
“Already, the first batch of students of VSU got placements in various marine and export companies. The university is planning to start the engineering college with 60 intake capacity of students in each course. Based on the progress of physical and human resources, we will start other related branches,” said Mr. Reddy.
