Students told to read newspapers

August 28, 2011:

Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) Registrar V. Narayana Reddy has appealed to the school managements and parents to develop the habit of reading newspapers, like The Hindu among children.
Mr. Reddy was launching the ‘Newspaper in Education' (NIE) programme organised by The Hindu in Shantiniketan English Medium High School at Kodayyapelem Gate here on Saturday.
He thanked The Hindu for organising NIE under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
The Registrar asked the institution managements and students to make use of the facility and develop language and communication skills, which are very important for students to face the challenges in the competitive world.
Recalling the services of The Hindu since 1878, Mr. Narayana Reddy said the newspapers were known for maintaining values and morals in journalism and made several efforts in building a good society.
“I am a reader of The Hindu since my childhood. There is a lot to learn from the 133-year old organisation. The services of the newspaper management through ‘Education Plus' and ‘Young World' supplements are very much encouraging and useful for students”, he said.
He asked the management to launch NIE programmes in schools and colleges at the mandal level since many students in rural areas lacked communication skills.
He praised the Shantiniketan School management for taking up NIE programme, and lauded about its achievements in the last 32 years.
12 lakh students
The Hindu Senior Assistant Regional General Manager S. Sridhar said NIE was being organised in 110 cities across the country and more than 12 lakh students are getting benefited under the programme.
Under NIE, classroom-based workshops, training on stress management, disaster management, vedic and fun mathematics, Young World science quiz, painting and speed reading competition will be conducted for children, he said.
Shantiniketan School correspondent and principal S. Moses explained about the activities of the school, which was established in 1979.
He thanked The Hindu management for selecting the institution for launching NIE programme.
Earlier, the students performed cultural activities at the inaugural function. School Vice-Principal A.B. Padmaja presented vote of thanks.
